Meltblown medical nonwoven fabric for protective masks

What is Meltblown?

Meltblown is a medical filter nonwoven made of polypropylene. It owes its name to the production process, i.e. the Melt Blown technology. It is a polymer melt blowing technology, which is currently one of the most modern methods in the world. It consists of the production of fibrous webs at high air velocity. As a result of this process, microfibers are formed, the diameter of which ranges from 2 µm to 4 µm.

Meltblown - effectiveness confirmed by research

Among other filter nonwovens, Meltblown has the best BFE percentage, ranging from 98 - 99.8%.

BFE (bacterial filtration efficiency) is a measure of the resistance of a material to the penetration of bacteria. The higher the BFE percentage of a nonwoven fabric, the better its ability to resist the penetration of bacteria and viruses.

Meltblown in medical face masks

Due to the proven effectiveness of Melblown nonwoven fabric in retaining bacteria and other harmful particles, it is the most important element of a medical face mask.

It is used as a middle layer in certified protective masks. The other two layers are made of standard PP (polypropylene) nonwoven fabric. All three layers are welded together with an elastic mask band, which you can also find in our assortment.

Mechanical properties of Meltblown

The special production technology of Meltblown PP makes this non-woven fabric fluffy and resistant to folds. It is characterized by an increased amount of microfibers per unit area, which is why it has such good filtration properties.

In addition to being used in certified face masks, Meltblown is also used as a material for air and liquid filtration, as an insulating material, as absorbent material (e.g. for cloths), etc.
